Meet Walter!
When Walter arrived at the Maryland SPCA, he had just undergone a hind leg amputation. Despite everything he had been through, his gentle nature won over everyone he met. Our team provided expert medical and behavioral care, helping Walter adjust to life on three legs.
On his adoption day, staff flooded our lobby to give Walter a heartfelt sendoff. We knew Walter and his adopter might need support as he adapted to his new home. Thanks to the Lucy Community Fund, our team was there to check in – ensuring a smooth transition for both of them. Since moving in with his new family, Walter’s life has been full of love, excitement, and many new friends.
His adopter shared: “Walter doesn’t seem to realize he’s missing a limb. I’m amazed by his mobility every single day. He’s learned the routine very quickly and gets excited to go on walks to meet all the other neighborhood dogs and to keep the squirrels in check.”

Meet Duckie!
Duckie’s life had a tough start. As a kitten, both of her eyes were severely damaged from an infection. To give her the best shot at a healthy life, Duckie's eyes were removed, leaving her completely blind. When she was transferred to our shelter as an adult, Duckie’s confidence shined, but she needed a stable home.
With behavior support and enrichment, she waited for the perfect match – until Celeste stepped up: “I never thought of adopting an animal with special needs, but now I can’t imagine my life without her.”
